I had an idea to do a reverse film piece. When researching further into this I came across this artist, Ludovic Zuili. He along with the help of a fellow artist Simon Bouisson created a 9hr film, that was broadcasted on French Tv, of him walking backwards through Tokyo. He then reversed this and it seems like he is the only one walking forwards and the rest of Tokyo is walking backwards. I found this extremely captivating and well planned out.
This extracts 1 video I have put on the side is a small 5 minute section of this 9hr film. For the first minute the subtle music and the whole feel of the video draw you in and you don't know quite what to look at with everything going on. After the 1st minute the man is walking through an empty street and there is another man circling around him picking up water. This seems like it is used to keep viewers interested. After two minutes your mind gets confused and his walking seems so normal and you see him taking selfies with some girls from Tokyo. He seems to explore time using his photography as a preservation of his memories in a different and more interesting way. Along with his take on the time going backwards with his reverse video he also takes images which help present his travelling and explorations but with an interesting twist. When exploring further into his photography I noticed that he likes to travel around and take pictures of different places including himself or somebody else within the image. As you can see by the examples, on the left, he seems to capture his adventures and memories over time by setting up an aesthetically pleasing background and then placing a figure taking a photo in front of it to add something extra. In the others he uses his hand to describe what he is feeling or give the viewer some access to his mind as he is taking the photo. I find this an effective way of taking photos as it adds an interesting view to the images. The backgrounds alone would seem aesthetically pleasing to many people but with his inclusion of another figure he has given his images something extra that is beyond the norm and attracts in more viewers. Also noticeable within in these images is the composition of the girl and what she is taking a photo of. He used the thirds rule during composition by placing her on the side rather than in the middle and she is taking intricate and small part photos of a much larger image. A personal view I have on this is that it makes the images much more interesting as I want to know what she is taking a photo of and why. Then as I study this I get distracted by the wallpaper-like backgrounds and there is just so much detail to explore within each image. (click on images to get separate analysis) |
